Lets do the ultimate 1000 degree toy fire test with 2 Despicable Me Minions. These plush toys are stuffed with polyester fibre and I'm wondering if there is any difference between the fake Minion Vs real Minion. Many countries have strict fire safety laws on various things but the humble plush toy seems to be something that's often overlooked. There are non flammable stuffing materials available but they also come at a higher cost. Many paint roller brushes are a great example of a fibre that's non flammable / or resists continuous burning. Anyway burning up the Minions was fun and hopefully we always learn things along the way. The graphite style expanded polystyrene is amazing. I have seen it used in the film industry and a lightweight cement looking material that does not burn. It's normal use is the building industry as a more efficient insulating material that may also incorporate fire retardant chemicals.
Polystyrene foams are good thermal insulators and are therefore often used as building insulation materials, such as in insulating concrete forms and structural insulated panel building systems. Grey polystyrene foam (graphite EPS insulation), incorporating graphite has superior insulation properties. The amount of graphite added can be changed to give different shades of grey. There are many companies that supply graphited EPS insulation and you need to make sure it has been made to be fire safe.
The term flame retardants subsumes a diverse group of chemicals which are added to manufactured materials, such as plastics and textiles, and surface finishes and coatings. Flame retardants inhibit or delay the spread of fire by suppressing the chemical reactions in the flame or by the formation of a protective layer on the surface of a material. They may be mixed with the base material (additive flame retardants) or chemically bonded to it (reactive flame retardants). Mineral flame retardants are typically additive while organohalogen and organophosphorus compounds can be either reactive or additive.
Minions are the numerous creatures that appear in the Despicable Me franchise, which began with the 2010 film. They are also the official mascots of Illumination Entertainment, a division of Universal Studios, and have been described as being a corporate icon for Universal/Illumination's parent company Comcast on par with Disney's Mickey Mouse.
